This season already, the gambling operator 188Bet.com has signed up as shirt sponsor of two Premier League clubs – Wigan Athletic and Bolton Wanderers – in north-west England, while 11 out of 16 Portuguese league clubs have BetClic emblazoned on their shirt-fronts this season.

This multiple sponsorship trend reflects a more general proliferation of gaming sector marketing around sport, and football, in particular… Real Madrid, AC Milan (Bwin) and Lyon (BetClic) are the continent’s market leaders in the promotion of gaming online and the likes of the German Bundesliga (Bwin) and the Australian A-League (Bet365) are among the best bets for combined live action and betting online.

It’s clear that the online gaming sector is no longer about fantasy revenue forecasts and stellar predictions. The amounts gambled online already scale the billions, while the sector represents a multi-million dollar marketing boon for sporting clubs and organisations.

Most importantly in these hard times, it’s a sector that is continuing to grow. According to Global Betting and Gaming Consultants (GBGC) global online gambling yield will increase by 25 per cent over on the next three years, with a significant proportion coming from global interest in football betting.

As Mike Falconer, chief executive of online gaming services firm, BettorLogic, reported in the SportBusiness International sister publication, iGaming Business, “Football has been almost singularly responsible for the steep progression of both Asian and newer [Southern and Eastern] European markets…and can account for 75 per cent – 80 per cent of bets taken in the major Asian countries.”

The 188Bet.com sponsorship of the two clubs in England’s north-west is a case in point, leveraging both local loyalties and the fame of the Premier League globally, especially in the gambling operator’s main market, Asia.

“The Premier League is and has been heavily broadcast globally and is increasing in a number of markets with several pending deals which will take it through pay-per-view to free-to-air in a number of markets,” said 188Bet CEO Andy Scott.

“So, that is a very strong attraction. It gives us a presence in our current markets as well as visibility in new markets.”

It’s not only shirt sponsorship that is upping the ante for the gambling sector involvement in sport. 188Bet has signed two ‘official partnership’ agreements with Aston Villa and Chelsea, while Betfair, the leading betting exchange brand, has signed up for three years with current Premier League champions Manchester United.

Yet for clubs or organisations from jurisdictions in the United States or Europe where online gambling is banned or discouraged, such a close relationship between rights holder and gaming operator, may seem strange. And, it should be stressed that many European jurisdictions have yet to de-regulate the online gambling environment in the same way as the UK. But some European markets are catching up – and this is directly reflected in marketing activity. According to iGaming Business, the number of La Liga teams in Spain now sporting the logos of online operators are on a par with that of the UK in the early 2000s.

Similar growth is being witnessed in other EU countries such as Italy. In fact the biggest online gaming sponsorship deals in football are now in Spanish and Italian territories, where Austrian operator Bwin has set up landmark deals with Real Madrid and AC Milan. In the case of the Spanish giants, the sponsorship is thought to be worth around €45m over three years.

But changes to the law can’t come soon enough for Olympic Lyonnais. The French club was forced to start the new French football season without displaying the name of shirt sponsor BetClic, after the French football association rejected the club’s request to display the logo.
Then there is Portugal, once considered among the more accessible online gaming markets – and when BetClic signed up with 11 clubs in the top league for this season they gazumped Bwin which had title sponsored the entire national league from 2005-2008.

But in a move that will encourage other European governments to hold onto their gambling monopolies, the EU recently upheld the Portuguese government’s gambling restrictions as legal. The decision, which arose from a legal challenge brought by Bwin and the Portuguese League, could jeopardise the sponsorship contracts made by BetClic with the 11 Portuguese clubs.

Confusing? You bet. As is the situation Stateside, where the previous Bush administration passed a prohibitive anti-gaming law that has seen some online gaming operators jailed.
Although there are indicators that this legislation may change under the Democrats, any federally regulated online gambling system is likely to be fiercely protected and run by the major Nevada casinos.

Despite the unwanted attentions of government regulators, the online sector continues to grow its customer base – and now it has a new weapon in its marketing arsenal: live sports content. And the gaming sector’s relationship with sports rights is set to run and run. The depth of the relationship, however, will ultimately be determined by national legislators – and at this stage in the game, no one can predict with certainty how that particular story will pan out.

Unbeaten in 14 races lifetime, competes against the boys for the first time and comes from way off the pace to win the Breeders Cup Classic. She is a one in a lifetime horse as is Rachel Alexandra.

My personal opinion is it should be Zenyatta. I have nothing against Rachel Alexandra as I think she too is a phenomenon, but, she did not compete at the weekend in the Breeders Cup. Zenyatta did and WON!

If Zenyatta does not win the horse of the year title……………………well, I will leave it at that.

The Jim Zorn watch began immediately after the Redskins’ 14-6 loss to the Chiefs. But it appears he has done enough to save his job, for now.

Sources told FOXSports.com that following Sunday’s game, Zorn met with Redskins vice president Vinny Cerrato, who basically told him that the head coach had too much on his plate and that he wanted him to succeed as head coach. They agreed that Zorn would relinquish playcalling duties.

Later Sunday, Redskins spokesman Zack Bolno confirmed that information.

Zorn and Cerrato are to meet again Monday morning to discuss who the playcalling role will be transferred to.

The move comes amid heavy criticism of the beleaguered Zorn all season long, which had grown each week as the Redskins lost four of their first six games against the NFL’s weakest schedule. Zorn’s offense has not scored more than 17 points in any game this season. In Sunday’s loss, Washington earned only seven first downs and failed to score a touchdown.

“This offense is better than six points, 100 percent. And that’s on me,” Zorn said before the change in his duties was announced. “It’s my fault.”

Last week, former NFL asistant coach Sherm Lewis was hired by the Redskins in a consultant role with the underachieving team. Since starting 6-2 in 2008, the Redskins have lost 10 of their last 14 games.

Tennessee went 13 and 3 last season and were favoured in many camps to go all the way this year. That won’t happen! They have yet to win a game this season having been shown how to play football yesterday in New England. Tom Brady was at his best in a 59 to Zero walloping of Tennessee. The Head Coach must be concerned about his position today.

NEW ORLEANS – With three other unbeaten franchises, the Saints can’t officially be proclaimed the NFL’s best team six weeks into the season.

So who is? Or, as they say here in the Bayou, who dat?

Well, we now know it isn’t the New York Giants. Not after the G-Men were handed a lopsided first loss Sunday inside a raucous Louisiana Superdome.

No disrespect to Minnesota, Indianapolis and Denver. But it’s hard to picture a currently perfect squad playing a near-perfect game like the Saints did against another legitimate NFC powerhouse.

A 48-27 Saints thumping was filled with validation of New Orleans’ legitimacy from both a team and individual standpoint. New Orleans (5-0) jumped on the Giants (5-1) faster than Mardi Gras revelers grab beads tossed from a parade float. The offensive display was so obscene that the Saints would have blown the game open earlier than the second half if not for shoddy special-teams coverage.

Quarterback Drew Brees (369 passing yards, four touchdowns) staked his early claim to NFL Most Valuable Player honors. Tight end Jeremy Shockey gleefully extracted revenge against his former team. The Saints proved their revamped defense and rushing attack are no mirage.

Tom Benson even got into the act. The 82-year-old Saints owner cranked out his trademark “Benson Boogie” and led a conga line of cheerleaders around the field once the game ended.

“Everybody showed up,” Brees said after a sack-free, turnover-free performance. “The fans were awesome. The defense played great. The offense did what we had to do.

“To win the way we did says a lot.”

Those who doubted the 2009 Saints are legitimate Super Bowl contenders should have become believers by halftime. The Saints scored touchdowns on five of their first six possessions against what was the NFL’s top-ranked defense.

New Orleans opened by punishing New York on the ground, rushing four times from the Giants’ 11-yard line before running back Mike Bell scored on a 2-yard dive. Brees then began an aerial assault that included 15 consecutive completions. Saints wide receiver Marques Colston said New Orleans had targeted New York’s secondary for deep passes because of injuries at cornerback and safeties who “haven’t really been able to cover some of the better receivers. We knew we could explore some weaknesses.”

NFL Week 6

<!–

Explore and exploit. Brees connected on eight throws of 19-plus yards — seven of which went to Colston as part of his 166-yard effort — and had another attempt that drew a 35-yard pass interference penalty on Giants cornerback Corey Webster.

Shockey, the former Giants star traded to New Orleans in the 2008 preseason, got into the act with a four-catch, 37-yard outing. Afterward, Shockey continued to try to downplay the revenge factor against New York because of the ugly split between both parties. Shockey, though, couldn’t contain his emotion on the field. Shockey regularly led cheers from the sideline and did a self-described “riding-the-horse” celebration dance after catching a one-yard touchdown pass to put New Orleans ahead 14-0.

“All week long he was pretty tame,” Brees said of Shockey. “But you knew the inner fire was burning and just about to explode.”

Giants quarterback Eli Manning, a New Orleans native, also had ample reason to look forward to Sunday’s game. It would be his first inside the Louisiana Superdome, where his father Archie played quarterback from 1975 (when the stadium opened) to 1982.

Simply put, this wasn’t the kind of homecoming the Mannings had hoped for. Eli was harried into a 14-of-31 passing performance that included one sack and one interception before being lifted late in the fourth quarter. Manning couldn’t connect on several shots deep — passes he needed to hit if New York was going to keep pace with the Saints.

New Orleans also held the Giants’ vaunted running game in check by surrendering a modest 84 yards on 19 attempts. In comparison, the Saints dispelled any lingering belief that they field a “finesse” offense by generating 133 yards and three touchdowns on 39 carries.

“We could not stop them,” said Giants coach Tom Coughlin, whose team had entered with an 18-3 road record in its past 21 games. “There are no excuses. We played poorly. We have to regroup.”

As for the Saints, the only obstacles to continued success may be injuries and overconfidence. New Orleans had failed to capitalize on the momentum generated by an NFC Championship Game appearance during the 2006 season. But this seems a different squad than the ones in 2007 and 2008 that never strung together more than two consecutive victories in a 24-game span.

Said Brees: “The past two seasons, we didn’t achieve the goals we set being one of those playoff teams fighting for the No. 1 or 2 seed, knowing the formula of how to win, following it and being disciplined. We lacked consistency. I feel like we’ve learned from that.”

Just like the NFL is learning these Saints are for real.

The Premier League has ruled out replaying Sunderland’s 1-0 win over Liverpool, despite Darren Bent’s illegal ‘beach ball’ goal.

Bent scored the only goal of the game after his shot deflected in off an errant beach ball, thrown onto the pitch by a Liverpool fan.

Law Five of the game states that any ‘outside agent’ must be removed from the pitch, and the play started again with a drop ball.

However, the Premier League will not force the match to be played again, despite an obscure precedent.

Monday’s Guardian recalled a World Cup play-off between Uzbekistan and Bahrain being replayed in 2005, after the referee incorrectly disallowed a penalty and restarted the game with a free-kick, rather than another penalty.

Despite this, a Premier League spokesman claimed on Sunday: “We won’t be asking for them to play it again.”

Another spokesman was quoted by The Mail on Sunday as saying: “The beach ball was an inanimate object so the referee should have stopped the game as soon as he was aware it was on the field of play. However, the difficulty would be if he didn’t see it until it was struck by the match ball.”

For his part, Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez said after the match: “These things happen. It’s a very technical question but it has to be a goal.

“These things can happen in a lot of games. It’s a bad situation for us that the ball was in the middle and was influential but again I will say we didn’t play well. That’s the main thing for me.

“If the ball was going in and it was deflected wide, he would not have given the goal.”

Meanwhile, Mike Jones, the referee that incorrectly allowed the goal to stand, is reportedly set to be punished for his error by being dropped from the Premier League programme next weekend.

The Sun reports that Jones will be asked to explain his decision, and will not be given a top-flight appointment in the coming round of games by the Professional Game Match Officials board, who meet on Monday.

Jeff Winter, a former Premier League referee turned pundit, said on Sunday: “I’m absolutely amazed. It is basic law in football. The goal should just not have stood.

“The laws of the game state that if there’s an outside interference the game has to be stopped.

“Talk about an outside influence – the ball went in off the beach ball and completely deceived the Liverpool goalkeeper.

“I am absolutely amazed that for a referee at that level of football, that between him, his assistant, the fourth official, they didn’t see what had happened and give the correct decision.”

Sir Alex Ferguson has been charged with improper conduct by the Football Association for his remarks about referee Alan Wiley’s fitness.

The Manchester United manager has already apologised to Wiley but that has not saved him from an FA charge.

He now has two weeks to respond and can request a personal hearing if he wishes.

Ferguson made his comments following United’s 2-2 draw with Sunderland at Old Trafford on October 3.

He accused Wiley of not being “fit enough for a game of that standard” and accused him of “walking up the pitch for the second goal needing a rest”.

Ferguson could face a hefty fine or a touchline ban if he is found guilty of the charge.

The FA said in a statement: “Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has been charged with improper conduct.

“The charge relates to media comments made by Ferguson about referee Alan Wiley following United’s match against Sunderland at Old Trafford on October 3. He has until November 3 to respond to the charge.”

Ferguson apologised to Wiley a week after making the remarks having concluded his attack was ill-judged.

He said then: “I apologise to Mr Wiley for any personal embarrassment that my remarks may have caused and to the FA for going public with my views.

“I would wish it to be noted that I have always respected Mr Wiley’s integrity and that I did not state or imply that Mr Wiley is a bad referee, that he was in any way biased, that decision-making generally during the game was poor, or that he missed any key incident during the game.

“My only intention in speaking publicly was to highlight what I believe to be a serious and important issue in the game, namely that the fitness levels of referees must match the ever increasing demands of the modern game, which I hope will now be properly addressed through the appropriate formal channels.”

Sea The Stars, the first horse in history to win the 2000 Guineas, Derby and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in the same season, has been retired.

There had been a possibility that John Oxx’s brilliant colt would run in the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita on November 7, but the decision has been taken to call time on his career.

Oxx said: “It has been decided after discussions with Mr Christopher Tsui (owner) that Sea The Stars will not take part in the Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita on November 7.

“He’s had a long season and has been in regular fast work from March 3, with his final workout on October 2. He’s been in intensive training for seven months with only a three-week break after the Eclipse Stakes at the beginning of July.

“We feel it is unfair to keep him going any further given his unprecedented record of achievement in the last six months.

“He’s come out of the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in his usual good form. He is fit and healthy and has been cantering since the race.

“He is now retiring from racing, but I have no information on stud career details and an announcement will be made at a much later date when plans have been finalised.”

The three-year-old was beaten just once in nine starts, on his racecourse debut at the Curragh, and he amassed nearly £4.5million in prize money.

He won his maiden on unfavourably soft ground before landing the Grade Two Beresford Stakes, hinting at what was to come this year.

Sent off at 8-1 for the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, he beat hot favourite Delegator by a length and a half and became the first horse since Nashwan 20 years ago to follow up in the Derby, where he beat Fame And Glory by a length and three-quarters.

The Coral-Eclipse was next at Sandown where he beat subsequent Sussex Stakes and QEII winner Rip Van Winkle, with St Leger and Breeders’ Cup Turf winner Conduit way back in third.

At York in the Juddmonte International, he scared away everyone bar Aidan O’Brien to make it four Group Ones in a row and followed up in the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown, beating old rival Fame And Glory.

But his crowning glory came at Longchamp when he landed Europe’s premier middle-distance race, overcoming trouble in running and a high-class field to win eased-down in the Arc.

His performance sparked comparisons with the likes of Dancing Brave, Mill Reef and Sea Bird.

Sea The Stars factfile:

Sire: Cape Cross
Dam: Urban Sea
Age: Three
Foaled: April 6, 2006 in Ireland
Owner: Christopher Tsui
Trainer: John Oxx
Jockey: Mick Kinane

Career overview:

Jebel Ali Stables & Racecourse European Breeders Fund (C & G) Maiden at the Curragh, July 13, 2008.

An unassuming racecourse debut by the future champion, and the only race he has ever lost. Sea The Stars – a half-brother to 2001 Derby hero Galileo – was a tardy starter but showed some potential by running on well into fourth. However, he offered few clues that he would develop into the greatest racehorse in the world.

Korean Racing Authority European Breeders’ Fund (C&G) Maiden at Leopardstown, August 17, 2008.

A well-backed Sea The Stars gets off the mark in good style. Despite racing on heavy ground – which would turn out to be his least favoured surface – Oxx’s juvenile stretches comfortably clear of the field.

Juddmonte Beresford Stakes at the Curragh, September 28, 2008.

Sea The Stars first Group success and his last appearance as a juvenile. The colt only beats his stablemate, Mourayan, by half a length. Tucked away for the season, most assessments agreed Oxx’s horse was an exciting prospect, although seen more of a Derby horse than a Guineas prospect.

Stanjames.com 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, May 2, 2009.

With Oxx’s first string Arazan missing the Guineas due to fast ground, Sea The Stars returns to the racecourse in the Newmarket Classic. Available to back at 8-1 on the day, he easily defeats pre-race favourite Delegator by a length and a half.

Investec Derby Stakes at Epsom, June 6, 2009.

With questions over Sea The Stars’ stamina hitherto unanswered, the Aidan O’Brien trained Fame And Glory starts the Derby as favourite. But Sea The Stars produces a performance of remarkable quality to put his rivals to the sword, travelling supremely well throughout.

Coral-Eclipse Stakes at Sandown, July 4, 2009.

Sea the Stars scooped his third Group One of the season by dismissing another O’Brien horse, Rip Van Winkle. Coming into the final furlong, the Ballydoyle horse looms alongside Sea The Stars as if to pass, but Oxx’s superstar finds plenty for pressure and strides on again.

Juddmonte International Stakes at York, August 18, August 2009.

Sea The Stars’ reputation scares off all but three rivals for this Group One clash, and two of those are pacemakers for his main rival. Once again it is left to O’Brien to provide the challenge to Oxx’s champion. His Mastercraftsman kicks clear of Sea The Stars in the home straight but is inevitably reeled in and passed.

Tattersalls Millions Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown, September 5, 2009.

Making his first return to home soil since his juvenile days, Sea The Stars once again defeats a spirited O’Brien-trained challenge. Fame And Glory, second in the Derby, reopposes but is defeated by two and a half lengths. Despite being on the go all season, that is the biggest winning margin of any of Sea The Stars Group One successes.

Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp, October 4.

Undoubtedly the crowning glory of a monumental career. Very keen early on and having to lose ground as Kinane sought to settle him, the writing looked on the wall. Had the fairytale come to an end? Not a bit of it. In fact, having to extricate himself from such trouble in such a race as this only adds to the legend. He shot clear to win like a fresh horse.

Rush Limbaugh as NFL owner is an unfunny joke. But the kingpin of talk radio counted on the sarcasm to fly over most of our heads and for television executives to ignore the absurdity and milk the controversy for ratings.

Did he get what he wanted? Increased ratings? Controversy? Shake up the other NFL owners?

Whatever he wanted to do, he did bring controversy and probably increased his ratings and most certainly is the talk of the country.

MIAMI (AP) – When the wildcat delivered a big play for the Miami Dolphins, coach Tony Sparano skipped along the sideline with glee, reached back and threw a roundhouse punch.

That was just in the first quarter. The knockout came much later, again with the wildcat.

Running back Ronnie Brown took the snap with 10 seconds left and scored on a 2-yard keeper for the fifth lead change of the final period, giving Miami a wild 31-27 victory over the New York Jets on Monday night.

Newcomer Braylon Edwards provided a big boost for the Jets, and two fake punts fooled the Dolphins. But Miami gained 110 yards with the wildcat, which was instrumental in three touchdown drives, including the last one.

“Like anything else, if you execute, good things will happen,” Brown said.

Jets coach Rex Ryan was annoyed the wildcat kept working.

“I used to see all those gimmicks when I was coaching back in college,” Ryan said. “I’ve been a part of some bad performances before on defense, just not this bad.”

The Dolphins started from their own 30-yard line with 5:05 left, trailing 27-24, and mounted a 13-play drive for the winning score. The march included four wildcat plays for 25 yards, the last on third down at the 2.

“We were in the huddle and said, ‘We’ve got to score a touchdown. No settling for field goals. We’ve got to finish the game,”‘ Brown said.

He ran up the middle, found a seam and crossed the goal line with 6 seconds to go. Even Brown’s teammates on the sideline were surprised by the call.

“That’s why we are players and not coaches,” Miami defensive tackle Jason Ferguson said. “All of us were talking about, ‘Why won’t you pass it?’ Because we got a touchdown, that’s why.”

The resilient Dolphins (2-3) came from behind three times in the fourth quarter, and they’re back in the AFC East race after losing their first three games. The Jets (3-2) have lost two straight and fell into a tie with New England for first place.

The game became a shootout reminiscent of the Dolphins‘ Dan Marino days, and filling that role just fine was Chad Henne.

In only his second NFL start, Henne completed 20 of 26 for 241 yards and two touchdowns. He threw deep to Ted Ginn Jr. for a 53-yard score to give Miami a 24-20 lead with 10:10 left.

“We made him look like Dan Marino,” Jets linebacker Calvin Pace said. “They did what they want, and they did it at will.”

The Jets kept answering with Edwards, acquired in a trade with Cleveland a week ago. He caught one scoring pass and set up New York’s other two touchdowns. The Jets‘ fake punts set up a TD and a field goal.

The Dolphins‘ trickery came via the wildcat, which they ran 16 times. On the game’s opening drive, Miami threw out of the formation for the first time this season, and Brown connected with tight end Anthony Fasano for a 21-yard gain. Ricky Williams then ran for 18 yards from the wildcat, and Brown scored on a 1-yard plunge on third down to cap a 7 1/2-minute drive.

The Dolphins used the wildcat five times in a TD drive that consumed nearly 9 minutes of the second half. But while they relied on ball control for much of the game, they also showed a newfound ability to strike quickly.

Ginn beat Darrelle Revis and two other Jets deep, catching Henne’s long pass just before crossing the goal line. It was a rare long gain by the Dolphins, who came into the game with only two completions of 20 yards or more to wide receivers.

“Teddy ran a great route, and they gave us the coverage we wanted,” Henne said.

Williams set up a field goal when he gained 59 yards on a reception, with all the yards coming after the catch. He finished with 68 yards rushing on 11 carries, and Brown ran for 74 yards in 21 attempts.

The Dolphins totaled 413 yards, converting nine of 14 third-down chances and controlling the ball for 33 1/2 minutes.

“We were definitely in a dog fight for 60 minutes,” Henne said. “It shows a lot of character in our team.”

Jets rookie Mark Sanchez was 12 of 24 for 172 yards and benefited immediately from the addition of Edwards, who caught a 3-yard scoring pass to cap his first series with the Jets. Edwards made a leaping 34-yard catch on third-and-21 to set up another TD.

“Everyone saw it – he’s a big-time receiver,” Ryan said. “That’s one thing we did right last week was make that trade for him.”

NOTES: Dolphins third-string RB Patrick Cobbs came out of the game in the fourth quarter with a knee injury. … Jets WR David Clowney also hobbled out of the game in the fourth quarter. … The Jets‘ Steve Weatherford ran 26 yards with a fake punt. It was only the second carry of his four-year career.
